Something is very wrong with my computer. If things look funny and there aren’t any pictures, its because my computer hates me.

(You’d have to check out the comments on my previous bread post to understand the title there. Just so ya know.)

Since I posted about

  • baking bread
  • , and y’all were so nice to leave comments, I thought I’d give you the other recipe. Of course, I wasn’t going to pass it along until I tried it. Yesterday I tried it.  It was good. :) As you will see the recipe is very similar to the white bread recipe I gave you.

    Scald 1 1/2 Cups Milk
Dissolve 2 tsp sugar in 1 Cup warm water. Add 2 pkgs (4 1/2 tsps) yeast. Let sit for 10 minutes.

    Put into large bowl:
1/2 Cup lightly packed brown sugar
    2 Tbsp salt
    1/2 Cup Shortening

    2 1/4 Cup warm water

Pour milk over and stir until shortening melts.
Stir yeast mixture with a fork and add to shortening mixture.

Beat in 6 Cups Whole wheat flour. Beat vigorously.
    Then gradually beat in 6 – 6 1/2 Cups All-Purpose flour.

The same as the white bread here, just knead it until it seems right. I like to leave it almost sticky.
Then oil a bowl or 9×13 pan and flip the dough around in it til it is covered with oil. Cover with warm wet towel or cloth. Let raise 1 1/2 hours, or until doubled.

Cut into 4 pieces and knead each piece into a loaf shape, getting all the air bubbles out.
Set in greased loaf pans and cover. Raise 1 hour, or until doubled.

Bake at 400 degrees for 30 minutes.

Let me know if you tried it. :)

    1. Your white bread recipe is rising as I type. I can’t wait to try this one as well.

Actually your white bread recipe has already been printed out and placed in my “Kim’s Favourite Recipe’s” book. And I haven’t even tasted it yet. But the smell and the feel of it, and yes, the taste of the dough, took me back to my childhood, so I know it’s gonna be great!

    2. Do you gals happen to have a good brown bread recipe? I tried to make it once, years ago, but it was all gooey and gross. (And that was after I baked it!) Just wondering. :)

    3. Hey Kim,
Oh I hope the bread turns out real good for you. And yes, we have a family favourite brown bread recipe. I’m sure there are lots of good ones out there, but I’ll pass ours along this evening maybe. That one is Katie’s favourite. :)

    4. We are enjoying fresh bread for a snack this afternoon, and my diet is quickly forgotten. But it’s so worth it!!! And the recipe is definitely worthy of my favorites book!

    5. Kim, just wait until you taste Mom’s brown bread! In my opinion, the best bread EVER. Especially with a little homemade strawberry jam. Mmmm.
